Survey of L3 teaching
Documenting efforts to teach a third language in postsecondary settings
This section of the site provides an online home for the research that my students did in Teaching a Third Language, an upper-level Spanish linguistics class I offered at Emory University during the Spring 2021 semester (SPAN/LING 410, Section 2). In this class we focused on the teaching of courses such as Portuguese for Spanish Speakers, Italian for Spanish Speakers, etc., in which bilingual students are learning a third language (L3) in a formal, institutionalized way. As a class project, my SPAN 410 students carried out interviews with professors at other universities who had created and/or taught these kinds of classes in the past. Our hope is that these interviews will be of interest to anyone in an institutional setting wishing to learn more about the benefits of adding such classes to their curricula.
Interviews were completed with three different professors, and are presented here in lightly edited form:
Will Travers, Ph.D.
